Medical records often contain names, dates of birth, addresses, medical record numbers, contact information, and other identifying information.
Finding and masking those identifiers manually can be slow, especially when a record contains hundreds or thousands of pages.
Today, we’re introducing the Attunement Redaction Assistant, a free tool designed to make that review process easier.
The Redaction Assistant identifies information that may need to be redacted and lets the user review and correct the suggested redactions before creating an output file.
Designed to assist human review
Automated redaction is not perfect. The Redaction Assistant may miss identifying information or identify information that does not need to be removed.
For that reason, every document must be carefully reviewed by the user before it is downloaded, shared, disclosed, or submitted to another service.
Processing a document with the Redaction Assistant does not, by itself, make the document de-identified under HIPAA or establish that it is appropriate for any particular downstream use.
How Attunement handles uploaded documents
For the Redaction Assistant:
Uploaded documents are processed only to provide the service.
Uploaded document content is not used to train or fine-tune machine-learning models.
Uploaded documents and derived document data are scheduled for deletion within seven days.
Encrypted backup copies may remain for up to fourteen additional days before deletion.
A Business Associate Agreement is available and must be accepted before protected health information is uploaded.

Why we built it
Clinicians and healthcare organizations work with medical information spread across scanned PDFs, faxed records, handwritten notes, questionnaires, and exports from different systems.
Before those records can be used in many workflows, someone has to examine them carefully and identify the information that should not be disclosed.
The Redaction Assistant is intended to reduce some of that repetitive work while keeping the final review and disclosure decision with the person responsible for the document.
The tool is free to use. We welcome feedback from clinicians and healthcare organizations working with complex medical records.
